Smartphone Gaming Needs a Physical Game Controller
Portable gaming is a big deal these days, and not just because it doesn’t require standing in front (or sitting down in front) of a TV. Being able to play a game while relaxing in bed or while traveling on a train, bus or in the car (backseat only for safety, ok?) makes gaming a lot more accessible and a lot less intrusive on others. But there’s a big issue that happens with portable gaming and that is in how the game being played is controlled. When a game is played on a game console or through streaming and you’re sitting in front of a TV, then you’re using a game controller that is happy with all the buttons and tabs and triggers and knobs that make the game sing out. That’s not othe case when it’s time to portable game on a phone — and we’re not talking about the screen size either, it’s about the controller which is less capable, less industrial and, in some cases, extremely annoying because it’s all virtual.
So when you think of games that require lots of button presses and thumb smashing, you really don’t think of that game being on a smartphone screen. That’s mostly because onscreen controls just don’t feel right, not to mention that they don’t react all that well and also take up valuable gaming real estate. So what is needed is an accessory that can make the above happen and so we’ll name it and it’s called the Gamevice Flex for iPhone that adds a full-on controller to the phone.
The Gamevice Flex for iPhone
The Gamevice Flex comes in two flavors — either on an Android phone or an iPhone — and they’re relatively similar but let’s stick with the iPhone, OK? You pull the two sides of the Flex apart from each other and place each on one of the two sides of the phone and push it closed the joypad and D-pad and 2 buttons on the left and the 4 diagonal buttons on the right accompanied by a Joypad and 2 buttons. Plus the two front triggers and a few smaller control tab/buttons. So for example example with an iPhone you download the free app to discover and play games, with streaming and playing titles from cloud services like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Stadia, GeForce Now and others, along with native mobile games from the Apple Arcade and the App Store.
Wait, Wait, No Wait
And yeah the connection is such that it’s low latency so that what you’re doing is reactive on the phone fast. And for that iPhone or Android phone that’s in a case, no you don’t have to take it out and then put it back after using the Flex (and probably dropping it during the process because that’s just what happens, you know) — because here you’re talking about it staying in its case and using it. That’s because it’s designed to fit (they say) thousands of cases. We do know the case around our iPhone 12 didn’t have to be removed. And the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone plug on the Flex makes for an easy audio use and is a great addition to the overall control mechanisms even if you’re not so keen on having a wired connection.
Now it would make sense if the Flex could handle different models, especially when it came to iPhones — so it does — expanding to fit most of the models (through the 14) and of course the lightning port is a pass through as well as regards charging issues.
Play A Game Already
But all the talk means less than whether it works well or not. It does. The company recommended a few games to try out, and we did go withMLB The Show 2022 because our reflexes take a sec to sort out with our non-15 year old brain. Simple to use, easy to use and making for a more fun time. Also tried a few Apple Arcade casuals and the same — having the equiv of a full on controller rather than onscreen is more than a plus, it’s a pleasure.
