The 5 Best Electric Vehicle Interiors
Reading Time: 4 minutesThere are some seriously stunning designs on display here.
Electric vehicles take the driving experience up a notch, especially in the luxury department. However, internal combustion engines, even the quietest ones, still make their presence known when accelerating.
Gearshifts are also noticeable and may introduce jerkiness.
Both of which are issues EV owners don’t have to deal with. Electric vehicle manufacturers know that an EVs drivetrain already makes for a luxurious experience. Adding to that luxurious experience is why some EV makers are creating amazing vehicle interiors that complement the sublime driving characteristics of an electric motor.
1. BMW i7
The BMW i7 is a luxury-focused EV with what might be the best interior ever fitted on a modern vehicle. The materials are first-rate throughout, but there are also novel touches of luxury that you don’t commonly see in a vehicle’s interior.
Glass is used freely across the interior, especially in what BMW calls the Interaction Bar. It’s a huge bar that spans the entire front cabin and houses tons of functionality. Not only does it control many functions, but it looks amazing.
The surface of the Interaction Bar is touch-sensitive, and you can control things like the hazard lights (which illuminate the entire bar a deep red color when active) or even open the doors by simply tapping the glass surface.
It’s cool to see that this vehicle isn’t just luxurious but also daring in its choice of materials. The glass trim might not be to everyone’s taste, and at worst, it might come across as a little chintzy, but it’s undeniably cool.
A huge display up front spans from the driver’s side to just past the HVAC controls. But this display isn’t the most impressive one inside the vehicle. Instead, that honor goes to the crown jewel of the interior, which is the optional 31′ BMW Theater Screen.
This mammoth screen transfers your living room entertainment system to your vehicle’s rear screen, but with much nicer seats. It’s undeniably the most luxurious experience you can have, watching the built-in Amazon Fire TV while enjoying the massaging functionality of the rear seats.
There’s also a Theater Mode which closes the window curtains and the panoramic roof so that you can enjoy your movie in true cinematic fashion.
2. Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan
The Mercedes-Benz EQS is another ultra-lux German EV sedan that hits it out of the park with its amazing interior. Like the BMW, the build quality is amazing, but the Mercedes sets itself apart with a massive display (it’s actually three displays under a single piece of glass) called the Hyperscreen.
If you’re into futuristic interiors, it doesn’t get any better than this. Mercedes took the opposite approach to the luxury Tesla would have taken. Tesla is all about minimalist luxury, but Mercedes throws minimalism out the window and goes all in on excess and opulence.
The Hyperscreen features OLED tech in some of the displays for amazing contrast ratios. In the EQS sedan, even the passenger has a dedicated screen, which is something that should be standard across more vehicles.
Through the passenger display, the non-driver can access great functions like controlling the radio and adjusting ambient lighting. If you’re looking for a traditional Mercedes interior fused with super futuristic technology, then this is the perfect EV for you.
The EQS sedan is also available in an AMG version, which places it among the best-performance EVs available.
3. Tesla Model S Plaid
The Model S Plaid is extremely fast; we all know that by now. But the Model S Plaid offers much more than its 1,000 horsepower and 200-mile-per-hour top speed.
The Plaid has come a long way in the interior fit and finish department. Tesla has been criticized for its interior quality, and the Plaid isn’t immune to this (the trim on the yoke steering device has been reported to deteriorate quickly). Still, it’s definitely a beautiful space to be in.
If you’re getting a Model S Plaid, the Ultra White vegan leather interior is a must. It might not be the easiest interior to keep clean, but the color goes impeccably well with Tesla’s minimalist theme.
The white contrasts perfectly with the black accents in the interior, especially the futuristic yoke. You can even play games on your Tesla’s big screen, which is a super neat feature. Overall, Tesla is a leader in what you can call futuristic luxury.
4. Hummer EV
If you’re into larger-than-life vehicles, it’s hard to beat the Hummer EV. Its interior is also an amazing place to be, with plenty of unique touches that give it a rugged sense of luxury.
The Hummer is available with an interior theme called Lunar Horizon, and it’s beautiful, although the Tech Bronze accents look slightly gaudy. But what is really cool is that the Hummer can blend tough utility with luxury, a unique type of luxury that sets it apart.
For example, the Hummer EV features a heavy-duty floor lining with lunar themes integrated into the design. As a result, it looks super cool, and you won’t have to worry about cleaning carpets when you go off-roading. Other cool touches include lunar surface-inspired designs on the speaker grilles, which give the interior a futuristic touch.
5. Lucid Air
The Lucid Air is a direct Tesla Model S competitor, but the interiors of these two vehicles take completely different approaches to luxury. The Tesla is a minimalist dream, and the interior is cold and futuristic.
On the other hand, the Lucid Air is warm and even a tiny bit retro. The door cards are lined in a very sumptuous fabric, which gives the interior a cozy vibe. Another amazing feature of the Lucid’s interior is becoming rarer in luxury cars, and that is actual buttons for the A/C fan speed, along with a physical dial for the radio volume.
These two things are indispensable in a vehicle interior, and automakers need to realize that no matter how futuristic they try to make an interior, touch-sensitive surfaces are a horrible way to adjust the radio volume and the fan speed.
So, the inclusion of these physical controls is truly a breath of fresh air in a touchscreen-dominated segment. Another awesome aspect of the Lucid Air interior is that the front seats are finished in a different shade from the rear ones.
It’s a unique touch that gives the Lucid Air interior personality and is very uncommon in the automotive world.
Electric Vehicles Are Revolutionizing Luxury Interiors
EVs have taken the luxury experience to a new level in terms of the driving experience, and electric vehicle makers are also creating some of the best interiors for modern vehicles.
