Tesla Model X Plaid vs. Lamborghini Urus: Which Is Faster?
Reading Time: 4 minutesThey’re both lightning-fast, but which is the faster of the two?
The Lamborghini Urus is famous across social media for representing the epitome of performance in the SUV realm. This ultra-quick SUV from the famed Italian car brand is attractive and blindingly fast.
It’s also ridiculously expensive, especially when an inconvenient truth suddenly appears in the form of an electrified SUV. The Tesla Model X Plaid rivals the Urus in most metrics and surpasses it in many—all at a steep discount. They are both super fast, but which one is the quickest?
What Is a Lamborghini Urus?
The Lamborghini Urus is supposed to be the ultimate SUV. In fact, Lamborghini goes as far as calling it a ‘Super Sport Utility Vehicle.’ Whatever this means is anyone’s guess, but the Urus is definitely a fast SUV.
The ingredients are all there, especially the 600+ horsepower engine and the amazing sound it makes upon startup. There is a problem with this ‘Lamborghini,’ though.
Lamborghini is famous for its engines, and wherever you look across its lineup, you’ll encounter high-revving V10 engines, as well as howling naturally aspirated V12s. Large, naturally aspirated engines are the staple of Lamborghini, but the Urus makes do with a twin-turbo 4.0L V8. Not only is this engine not as dramatic as a V12, but it’s also shared with other VW products, like the Cayenne.
It seems somewhat lazy for Lamborghini to fit such a pedestrian power plant in one of its vehicles, especially for a brand renowned for marvelous engines.
The styling isn’t anything to write home about either, especially compared to the amazing designs that Lamborghini has spawned throughout its history. The SUV is also ultra-expensive, ringing in at around $300,000 in the real-world car market for a used example.
What Is a Model X Plaid?
The Model X Plaid is the SUV sibling of the performance EV king, the Model S Plaid. Just like its ultra-quick stablemate, the Model X Plaid is a blur on wheels. This SUV is based on the venerable Tesla Model X, but the already fast EV is given the Plaid treatment, which transforms it into a supercar slayer.
The Plaid version of the Model X makes 1,020 horsepower, which puts it in the company of hypercars. The amount of performance you get for your dollar is one of the biggest differences between the Urus and the Plaid.
The Lamborghini seems like a bad badge-engineering job, where you’re paying absurd amounts of money for a Volkswagen SUV with a Lamborghini badge. But the Plaid actually delivers crazy amounts of performance for the money.
The Lambo is quick, but the Plaid takes things into a different dimension. This is to be expected when you consider the Plaid has almost twice the horsepower as the Lambo SUV.
It’s also very practical, especially with the Falcon Doors and the wide entry point they create. In terms of overall quickness, the Model X Plaid is still the undisputed champion of not only the electric SUV segment but basically every other automotive category existent.
How Quick Is the Lamborghini Urus?
In terms of raw quickness, the Urus can accelerate in a ferocious manner. And for the price, it better be quick. Otherwise, what’s the point of paying so much money for an SUV?
Without taking into consideration the absurd price, the Urus is a quick vehicle. According to Motortrend testing, a 2019 Urus accelerated from 0-60 in three seconds flat.
This is blindingly fast, even for a dedicated lightweight sportscar, never mind an SUV. The quarter mile is also eclipsed in a quick manner, it only takes the Urus 11.3 seconds to complete the run at 120.1 MPH.
Top speed? Well, that’s also amazing for an SUV at approximately 190 miles per hour. All of these performance figures set the Lamborghini Urus apart from many SUVs, but it’s definitely not enough to put it over the top of a certain electric SUV.
How Quick Is the Model X Plaid?
Unreal. That should be the word used to describe the technologically advanced Model X Plaid‘s speed to those unfamiliar with its prowess. This EV SUV might not seem like an ultimate performer, especially compared to the flamboyant Lamborghini.
But it’s on a different planet in terms of acceleration. The Model X Plaid demolishes the Lamborghini Urus on its way to 60 miles per hour with an insane time of 2.5 seconds (using Tesla’s rollout subtraction estimates).
A time below three seconds is enough to put the Model X Plaid in a very prestigious group of vehicles. This is even more astonishing when you consider it’s a family SUV that can seat six people. What Tesla has been able to achieve with this big and heavy SUV is beyond belief. The quarter mile is also completed in 9.9 seconds, which is phenomenal.
But, it is absolutely real, and this time not only shames the Urus, but it also makes the Model X the quickest accelerating SUV on the planet. The Plaid might look boring on the outside, but once you’re seated behind the wheel (yoke, actually), the Model X Plaid turns into the heaviest sports car in the world.
At 5,390 pounds, the Model X Plaid is a heavy vehicle, but the tri-motor AWD system definitely has no problem moving the large SUV at a blistering pace. The top speed isn’t as ludicrous as the Lamborghini’s top speed, but at 163 miles per hour, it’s still plenty fast.
Tesla Model X Plaid vs. Lamborghini Urus: Which Is Faster?
Well, the Tesla Model X Plaid is clearly the quicker vehicle of the two, and it’s not really close at all. The Tesla beats the Lamborghini in all the acceleration metrics, demolishing the Lambo on the way to 60 miles per hour, as well as through the quarter mile.
The differences aren’t negligible either, seeing as how the Model X Plaid obliterates the Lamborghini Urus in terms of raw acceleration. The one thing saving the Lamborghini from complete embarrassment is its top-speed dominance, as well as the fact that the Lambo also handles great for an SUV of its size.
Regardless, considering the Tesla is basically half the price of the Lamborghini, the value equation looks horrible for the Urus. The only reason to buy the Urus is that you really want that shiny raging bull badge, regardless of how bad the value proposition is.
Tesla Dominates With Its Incredible Plaid EVs
Tesla has the performance EV segment covered with its Model S and Model X Plaid electric vehicles. There aren’t any other regular production vehicles that come close to matching the alarming acceleration these two vehicles are capable of.
Some gasoline-powered SUVs might eke out the Model X Plaid at the very top end, but the Tesla embarrasses all competition in terms of sheer acceleration.
