Samsung’s New Foldable Phones Are Here
Reading Time: 3 minutesThe Z Flip 5 has a bigger outer display, while the Z Fold 5 offers a brighter inner screen.
Samsung announced two new foldable smartphones at Unpacked 2023: the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. At first glance, these fresh foldables look just like last year’s Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4. But there are some key differences that make them unique: Maybe it isn’t worth upgrading from 2022’s Flip and Fold, but for everyone else, they might be worth checking out:
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
This year, the Z Flip 5 is more efficient than ever, sporting a 3.4-inch outer screen that Samsung dubs the ‘Flex Window.’ This screen is much larger than that of its predecessor, the Z Flip 4, which had a 1.9-inch outer display.
You can set up widgets on the Flex Window, which is great for people who love customization. You can try clocks that match the watch face on your Galaxy Watch 6, display a photo gallery, follow the stock market, or control music playback. The Flex Window has a notch on one side, where the Z Flip 5’s two cameras reside. You can use these cameras when the phone is open, and you can even snap selfies when the phone is folded. Samsung says you can also toggle network connections and reply quickly to texts without opening the phone.
On the inside, the Z Flip 5 has a 6.7-inch OLED display. Whether it’s open or closed, the phone is splash-resistant, with an IPX8 rating, and it ships with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. You can choose between 256GB of internal storage, or 512GB. If you want to buy this smartphone, you’ll have to shell out at least $999. (Foldable phones ain’t cheap.)
The Z Flip 5 is launching Aug. 11, but you can pre-order it now:
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5
Although they are very different devices, the Z Flip 5 and the Z Fold 5 have one thing in common—they fold flat when closed. This is thanks to Samsung’s new hinge design. In older versions of these phones, you’d see a small gap when the devices were folded. It’s not a revolutionary change, but it does look better, and it helps keep dust out of the display when keeping your phone in your pocket.
When you open up the Z Fold 5, you’ll see a 7.6-inch display—large enough to allow you to enjoy gaming and movies as you would on a tablet, while still retaining the portability of a smartphone. This phone also ships with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, too.
Samsung has made a few UI tweaks to let you make the most of a large display. One of these will show your messaging apps in a pop-up when you’re watching videos, which lets you chat with friends without interrupting your show. Samsung says it’s also enhanced the drag-and-drop for better multitasking, and that the phone has a brighter display so you can read text and watch videos even in bright sunlight.
The Z Fold 5 has 12GB RAM, a 4,400mAh battery, three rear cameras including a 50-megapixel primary camera, and a 6.2-inch outer display. You can choose between 256GB, 512GB, and even 1TB of internal storage. All of this can be yours for a starting price of $1,799.
You can pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 5 now, and expect it to launch on Aug. 11:
