Samsung Unveils the 200MP Sensor That Will Power the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s Camera
Reading Time: 2 minutesThe Galaxy S23 series will launch in February, and the S23 Ultra will be packing a massive 200MP main camera promising much better low-light shooting.
One of the hottest rumors surrounding the upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra is that it will pack a camera with a massive 200-megapixel resolution.
Now, that is all but confirmed. With the launch of the phone nearly upon us, Samsung has unveiled its brand-new 200MP HP2 sensor. It promises vastly better low-light photography along with dynamic range improvements.
Samsung’s New HP2 Sensor
Samsung’s ISOCELL HP2 sensor is a 200MP sensor that is 1/1.3 inches in size—a comparable size to the 108MP sensors that exist today. As a result, the pixel size is a slight downgrade on the S22 Ultra, at 0.6μm.
However, Samsung says that its new Tetra2pixel technology will enable the pixel size to change dynamically based on the available light.
So, in low light conditions, it transforms into either a 1.2μm 50MP or 2.4μm 12.5MP sensor by combining four to 16 neighboring pixels. Among the existing S23 rumors was the suggestion that the camera would shoot at 12.5MP by default.
This should help the camera to perform well in less-than-ideal conditions and explains why Samsung emphasized low-light performance when it announced the launch date of the S23 series. At full size, a 200MP image is said to be in the region of 20-40MB each.
There are numerous other technical improvements as well, which you can read about in Samsung’s announcement if you want to.
They include something called Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology, which will improve dynamic range in brightly-lit scenes, reducing the chance of taking washed-out photos. It’ll also shoot 8K video in the 50MP 1.2μm mode, and capture 4K video at up to 60fps in HDR.
Of course, specs are only part of the equation and they don’t always translate to vastly superior performance. For example, while a sensor may be able to handle a lot more detail, a camera still needs a lens that’s able to resolve that extra detail in the first place.
But the signs are good. A sample photo (above left) emerged last November, shared by the noted leaker Ice Universe on the Chinese social network Weibo.
It compared the S23 Ultra with the S22 Ultra (above center) and the Pixel 7 Pro (above right) and suggested that the new model was indeed able to capture much more detail. The image shows greater texture in areas where the other cameras tended to smooth it over.
An S23 Ultra Exclusive
The 200MP main camera will be exclusive to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The other two models in the range, the S23 and S23 Plus, are expected to have 50MP cameras with smaller sensors but larger individual pixels.
We’ll find out all the details soon enough, as the phones are set to be launched at the next Galaxy Unpacked event on February 1st.
