Reading Time: 2 minutes

VPN provider ProtonVPN has launched browser extensions for a number of web browsers.

VPN service ProtonVPN has launched extensions for various web browsers, including Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

ProtonVPN Offers Extensions for Web Browsers

Popular VPN (virtual private network) provider ProtonVPN has announced the beta launch of web extensions for a range of browsers.

On March 1, 2023, ProtonVPN released a blog post regarding the launch, stating that a browser extension was one of the company’s most requested features from customers.

Within the ProtonVPN blog post was a list of perks offered by the provider’s new browser extensions. This includes support for devices that struggle to host a full VPN app and devices where you do not have the administrative ability to install a full VPN app. On top of this, you have the ability to connect to different VPN servers in different browsers and browse privately ‘without affecting speeds or the IP address of the other apps on your system.’

Later in the blog post, ProtonVPN listed some additional benefits of its browser extension feature, such as bypassing censorship, preventing tracking, and hiding your browser history from your internet service provider.

ProtonVPN also took to Twitter to announce its launch, listing some of the main perks offered by its extension feature.

However, unlike the full ProtonVPN app, this browser extension option only encrypts your browser’s internet connection, not all of your device’s connections.

ProtonVPN’s Extensions Can Be Used on Multiple Browsers

These new VPN extensions are available on a range of browsers, including:

  • Google Chrome
  • Chromium
  • Mozilla Firefox (along with LibreWolf and Waterfox)
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Brave
  • Opera
  • Vivaldi

ProtonVPN’s Free Plan Does Not Offer the Extension Feature

Though ProtonVPN’s new extension feature is certainly exciting, not all subscribers to this VPN service will benefit from it.

In the ProtonVPN blog post regarding the launch, it was also written that the browser extension option is a ‘premium feature available to everyone with a paid Proton VPN plan,’ including Proton VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, Proton Visionary, and Proton for Business. This means that those signed up for ProtonVPN’s free plan will not be able to access a VPN extension via this service.

ProtonVPN’s Extension Feature Offers Perks and Convenience to Paying Customers

While only paying ProtonVPN customers can use this new browser extension feature, many will still benefit from the added convenience and accessibility it provides. If you’re interested in this feature but are subscribed to ProtonVPN’s free version, check out its paid plans to see if any of them may suit you.
