Legend of Dragoon, A Blast From the Past in the Present!
Opening –
I've been spending a lot of time playing a lot of my old games from way back when and some of those games haven't aged a day since I played them eons ago. Some of them reminded me why I stopped playing them in the first place.
Grandia III, Lunar 1 & 2 and Crash Bandicoot 3, all of these I no longer have on account of the fact that 3 out of 4 of the games require that I grind in order to make a real difference in the game which I won't do.
So, now Legend of Dragoon is up to bat. This game existed during a time where it was worth it to have RPGs be as long as possible. This game consists of 4 disks. While there is so much to love and appreciate about the game now from my older, more mature perspective, there was so much I didn't like about it back then.
I'll get into it in a bit, but the biggest thing with me was the length. I remember having to make excuses about why I wanted to get rid of the game but this is another game where I grinded, but my perspective and gaming skill have changed since I was 20 which I'll share with you now.
When I was 20 –
I have to admit that I was a bit immature when I was gaming on the Playstation starting out, I grinded and when I felt that the game was taking too long, I'd quit and go onto something else, something that didn't take so much of my time to play and beat.
Legend of Dragoon was one of those games where I didn't care for the game because of the length, I couldn't appreciate the game as it was in its truest form. I often found myself passing the game over for something like one of the Crash Bandicoot games or even Wild Arms 2 at that point.
Of course, I would later go onto play the game but wouldn't stay with it because I was more interested in spending my time trying to quickly speed through the game so I could play others.
However, it takes a special kind of gamer to appreciate a game's true value and really respect the diamond in the rough that it is. Which brings me to….
The Present Day –
As I mentioned before, I bought back some of my old games and among them was Legend of Dragoon. In the present day, I began playing Legend of Dragoon. Now, there are a couple of things I'm not going to do in this game. For one, I'm not going to grind.
Any gamer worth his salt is capable of making it through the game on their merit alone and not some age old ritual such as grinding.
The second thing, I don't plan on rushing through the game. For the most part, I am at a point where I am trying to see which games I want to keep and which ones I want to get rid of out of the pile I bought back.
Right now, I am playing through Legend of Dragoon and have no real intention to run through it. See, I've grown and mastered several skills of my own merit where I don't need to grind. One particular skill I developed is treasure hunting. While this might seem like its a really for real bogus skill, it's very real.
What this skill consist of is thoroughly exploring a place, every place you go to looking for treasure aplenty while killing the attacking monsters. In so doing, you'll gain the experience needed to be more than a match for whatever comes.
Sometimes it pays to have a list of the items you're looking for like with the Stardust, but it is just enough to go looking for the Stardust to compel you to explore an area fully and kill enemies while you're at it.
This time around, I'm all about playing the game while employing methods of my own design like I am not concerned about mastering all of the additions, I want to use the most powerful addition and master the timing it takes to successfully learn the additions. In Addition, I plan to take it nice and slow.
Some of these additions can be specifically used during boss fights like using the Double Slash on bosses who don't respond so well to longer additions like Volcano or Blazing Dynamo.
