Instagram Introduces Broadcast Channels

Instagram has introduced a new way for creators to interact with followers with its broadcast channels feature. These one-to-many messaging channels are being tested with a select few US creators, with plans to roll out further in future.
Instagram Creators Get Broadcast Channels
The new feature was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his own broadcast channel on 16 February 2023. The feature is meant to allow users to ‘engage directly with their followers at scale’.
Similar to other chats on Instagram, creators will be able to post text, photo, video, voice notes, and polls on these channels. However, as a one-to-many channel, only creators will be able to send messages. Meanwhile, followers can react to content and vote in polls.
The initial rollout is limited to a few US creators, but more features and users will be introduced in the coming months, according to Instagram. A future feature includes the ability to invite another creator to contribute to the channel.
Creators who are currently testing broadcast channels include Austin Sprinz, Chloe Kim, David Allen, FaZe Rug, Flau’jae, Gilbert Burns, Josh Richards, Karen Cheng, Katie Feeney, Lonnie IIV, Mackenzie Dern, Mikaela Shiffrin, Tank Sinatra, and Valkyrae.
Creators start a channel by sending a message from their inbox, after which followers will get a one-time notification to join. Only followers are able to join a broadcast channel.
Members of the channel are also able to set the frequency of notifications from the channel. Creators will be able to create subscriber-only broadcast channels for exclusive content.

A New Way for Creators to Interact
Whether broadcast channels are a success will depend on how users react to the new feature. But for those who follow celebrities, this may create a new way for them to follow the daily lives and updates of their favorite accounts.
