How to Watch YouTube TV in 5.1 Surround Sound on Your Amazon Fire TV
Reading Time: 2 minutesEnhance your streaming TV experience with surround sound.
YouTube TV is no longer just for your laptop or smartphone. YouTube TV competes with streaming services such as Hulu + Live TV, Sling, and Philo. We’ll show you how to watch YouTube TV content in 5.1 surround sound.
What Is 5.1 Surround Sound?
Home theaters with surround sound are one reason why movie theaters are dying. A home theater with 5.1 surround sound has five speakers, and the .1 means it also has a subwoofer. The different speakers simulate real-world sound from different locations in your room. And the subwoofer provides an audible foundation with bass tones that round out the experience.
There are more and more ways to stream content in surround sound. And now, YouTube TV has joined the 5.1 surround sound bandwagon with its YouTube TV service.
How To Enable 5.1 Surround Sound on YouTube TV
YouTube TV and your Fire TV Stick should automatically apply the correct codec to use surround sound when you stream content. To check that it’s working, you can go to a 5.1 surround demo like this one:
While the video is playing, you should hear only the speakers indicated by the person narrating the video (left front, right rear, etc).
If you prefer to confirm that your system uses a surround sound codec, enable the stats for nerds information in YouTube TV:
- Start streaming content in YouTube TV.
- Using your Fire TV remote, navigate to the Settings icon(a small gear in the lower right corner of the screen).
- Under the Settings menu, navigate down and select Stats for nerds.
- Next to the Codecs section of the streaming information, you should see AC-3IEAC-3.
What if Surround Sound Doesn’t Work?
If your content doesn’t stream in surround sound, there are a few things you can try:
Check your FIre TV compatibility: YouTube TV lists Fire TV Sticks (2nd Gen, 3rd Gen, 4K, and Lite), Fire TV Cube, and select Fire TV Edition smart TVs as compatible.
Check your receiver: Ensure your surround sound receiver is powered on and connected to your Fire TV Stick. Otherwise, you may only hear audio from the built-in TV speakers.
Restart your Fire TV Stick: Unplug it and plug it back in. Always worth a try for any technical problems.
Update your devices: Updating your Fire TV Stick or YouTube TV app is worth a try.
Optimize Your YouTube TV Experience
Take advantage of YouTube TV’s high-quality audio streaming capability. To use your home theater without it would be a waste of smart technology.
