How to Use the PS5 Controller on a PS4
Reading Time: 2 minutesYou can make the most of your PS5 controller by using it on PS4, too.
The PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller is one of the best console controllers on the market. Not only does it offer a similar size and setup to Sony’s long-standing line of controllers, but it offers a ton of different features for you to take advantage of. While you can play PS4 games on the PS5 using the DualSense controller, some might wonder whether you can use the PS5 controller to play those same games on a PS4. The short answer? Yes, but with some strong caveats.
Here’s the thing: You can’t just plug a PS5 controller into your PS4 and start playing your favorite games. While that would be great, it seems Sony would prefer you buy the full PS5 console if you’re dead set on using its latest and greatest controller. Instead, you can use a few workarounds to play PS4 games with the PS5 controller without owning a PS5.
How to use a PS5 controller on PS4
If you want to play your PS4 with a PS5 controller for free, you will need to use the PS Remote Play app on a computer or smartphone. Once you’ve downloaded the app, select the PS4 as the console you want to connect to, and then follow the on-screen instructions. Once connected, ensure the PS5 controller is plugged into your computer or connected via Bluetooth to whatever device you’re using the PS Remote Play app on. From here, you can play your PS4 games from the PS4, but you’ll actually be playing them through remote play. It isn’t the best option, but it works.
If you don’t mind spending a little money to bridge the gap, consider a picking up a controller adapter. These adapters allow you to connect a controller to your console via Bluetooth, so you can play console games with virtually any controller you like. You could use your PS5 controller on a PS4, but also an Xbox or Switch controller. You’ll want to make sure you pick up a dongle that’s PS4 and DualShock compatible, however, like this one from BIGBIG WON.
Another alternative is a third-party item called the Titan Two, which manufacturer ConsoleTuner sells on Amazon and directly from its factory. This item costs almost $200, but will allow you to connect the PS5 controller directly to the PS4 using a USB cable. It’ll also let you connect other devices to each other. However, I don’t recommend going this route, as the device itself is expensive, and ultimately, you’d be better off saving up another $150 or so and buying a PS5 outright.
