How to Use a Google Nest Thermostat: A Beginner’s Guide

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Need help getting started with your Nest Thermostat? This guide will take you through the various setup options and settings.

The Google Nest Thermostat is one of the most popular smart thermostats you can install in your home. There are two models of Google’s thermostat available to purchase: Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat.

Whether you’re looking for an easier way to control the temperature in your home, or you want to save energy (and potentially money), then the Google Nest Thermostat can help you achieve this.

Installing Your Google Nest Thermostat

Installing the thermostat is probably the toughest part. Once it’s installed, programming the Nest Thermostat and using it is a breeze thanks to the models’ intuitive displays and UI.

If you’re using a Nest Thermostat, you’ll need to download the Google Home app for Android or iOS, or the Nest app for the Nest Learning Thermostat. Both apps will walk you through the process so you can set up your new device and add it to your home’s Wi-Fi. This will allow you to set the temperature, create schedules, and turn on advanced settings like Home/Away Assist.

Controlling Your Nest Thermostat

Neither Nest Thermostat models have a touchscreen. Instead, you use the ring surrounding, or on the side of the thermostat to control it.

To adjust the temperature manually, press or touch the ring, then swipe up/down (Nest Thermostat) or rotate left/right (Nest Learning Thermostat) to increase or decrease the temperature. The display will who you how many minutes/hours are left until the desired temperature is reached.

Alternatively, you can use the Nest or Google Home app to access your Nest Thermostat remotely. Here you can access the current temperature, change the temperature, or even set schedules for the rest of the day or week.

Nest Temperature Modes

The Nest Thermostat has five available temperature modes; Heat, Cool, Heat/Cool, Off, and Eco. You can manually set the mode you want, or the thermostat will automatically change between them, depending on the schedule. If your home only has a heating system, however, Heat/Cool and Cool will not be available to select.

  • Heat: The thermostat will heat your home and will attempt to maintain scheduled temperatures or those that have manually been set.
  • Cool: The system will cool your home.
  • Heat/Cool: Depending on the set temperature, the system will heat or cool your home. It will automatically switch between modes to meet scheduled temperatures throughout the day.
  • Off: Unless heating or cooling to maintain safety temperatures, the thermostat will not heat or cool. Any scheduled temperatures will not be met.
  • Eco: The system will heat or cool your home to keep within Eco temperature ranges. These are often set during the installation process but can be changed at any time.

It’s easy to adjust temperature modes on the Nest Thermostat. In the Google Home app for iOS or Android, select your device and choose Temperature mode, then select the mode you want. In the Nest app for iOS or Android, select your thermostat and choose Mode.

If you want to manually adjust the temperature modes, you can do this on the thermostat.

Nest Thermostat:

  • Open the Menu view.
  • Slide to Temperature mode and tap to select.
  • Slide to the mode you want, then tap again.

Nest Learning Thermostat:

  • Press the ring to access the Quick View menu.
  • Turn the ring to Mode and press in to select.
  • Turn the ring to choose a mode, and press to set it.
  • Press again to confirm your choice.

Create Temperature Schedules

The Nest Thermostat allows you to create temperature schedules to suit your lifestyle. Thankfully, it’s easy to access and create schedules in the Google Home or Nest app.

The Nest Learning Thermostat can also go one step further and use Auto-Schedule to create a schedule that’s personalized to you, based on your activity over the first few days to a week of installing the thermostat.

While the Nest Thermostat doesn’t have this functionality, it can use the Savings Finder to make suggestions to your schedule, helping you save energy.

Schedules in the Home App

If you have a Nest Thermostat, you’ll use the Google Home app to change temperature and set schedules. First, you can view the temperature schedule by touching and holding your device’s tile, then selecting Settings > Schedules.

You can add new temperatures, too:

  • Select the day of the week you want to add a temperature to, then tap Add.
  • Choose the temperature preset, or edit an existing preset.
  • Touch and drag the numbers up and down to change the time.
  • Repeat the process for each day of the week you want to create a schedule for.
  • Tap Done to save your changes.

You can follow the above instructions to edit an existing temperature, or if you want to remove a temperature, you can select the temperature by repeating the above steps, then tap Delete to remove it from the schedule.

If you’d like the same temperature schedules across multiple days, you can copy a daily schedule:

  • Tap the day of the week that you want to copy.
  • Select the option to copy that day’s schedule at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap each day you want to copy the schedule to, and click Done to save your changes.

Schedules in the Nest App

The Nest Learning Thermostat has the ability to Auto-Schedule. This will be turned on by default and means you don’t have to manually program your thermostat to get the best energy savings. You can change the temperature using the Nest Learning Thermostat or via the Nest app, and it will learn over time from your preferences.

To access the Nest Learning Thermostat schedule, open the Nest app, select your thermostat, then tap Schedule. Like the Nest Thermostat, you can add, copy, change, and remove existing temperatures.

Adding a new temperature is similar to the Nest Thermostat:

  • Select the day of the week you want to add a temperature to, then tap Add.
  • Tap on the grid to add a new setpoint.
  • Drag the setpoint left or right to change the time, and drag it up or down to change the temperature.

To change an existing temperature, access the schedule grid then tap and hold the setpoint to adjust it. You can remove temperatures by tapping the Remove button at the bottom of the screen, then selecting the setpoint you want to remove.

If you want to copy a daily schedule to another day, you can also do this via the app:

  • Tap and hold the day of the week that you want to copy the schedule from and select Copy.
  • Repeat the above step for the day of the week you want the same schedule on and select Paste.

Unlike the Nest Thermostat, the Nest Learning Thermostat also allows you to change the temperature schedule on the thermostat, manually.

Save Energy With Your Nest Thermostat

One of the biggest selling points of the Nest Thermostat is that it learns from you and your home activities to save energy when you’re not using, or don’t need to use your thermostat. There are various different ways the thermostat can save energy.

Eco Temperatures

When you aren’t home, your Nest Thermostat can switch to Eco Temperatures to prevent wasted energy when no one is at home using it. You can set your Eco Temperatures to ensure they are balanced, especially if you have pets.

Nest Leaf

You’ll know when you’re saving the most energy when you see the Nest Leaf on your thermostat. This indicates that you’ve selected a temperature that helps to save energy.

Savings Finder

If you’re using a Nest Thermostat (rather than a Nest Learning Thermostat), you can use the Google Home app to enable Savings Finder. This will automatically generate energy-saving suggestions so you can optimize your energy usage.

Energy History

To get an idea of how you’ve used the energy in your home over the last 10 days, you can access the Energy History tool. It should help you build better habits so you can save energy over future days or months.

Multiple Thermostats

If you have multiple rooms in your home that you use at different times of the day (for example, a home office), it may be worth investing in more Nest Thermostats. If you have more than one thermostat, you can teach them differently, set different temperatures, and assign different schedules. This can help you save even more energy as you won’t be using it unnecessarily in rooms or parts of your house you aren’t in.

An Easier Way to Control Your Home’s Temperature

The Google Nest Thermostat has a bit of a learning curve, but once you’ve uncovered all that it can do, there’s a wealth of opportunities to make energy savings that really work.

Whether you’ve opted for the Nest Thermostat or Nest Learning Thermostat, you can manually control your heating/cooling, set schedules, and enjoy new ways to save energy within your home.
