Reading Time: 4 minutesKeep your Xbox Series X|S and controller looking and feeling brand new with our cleaning guide.
If the fan inside your Xbox Series X|S has been sounding like it’s about to take off recently, or your console has been exhibiting signs of overheating, it might be time to give your system a little TLC by cleaning it.
Everything needs a service every now and then. From your car to your teeth, and yes, even your Xbox. Thankfully cleaning your Xbox Series X|S is much cheaper than a trip to the dentist, and you can do it yourself with items you can find at any supermarket.
Why Should I Clean My Xbox Series X|S?
Dust is an unavoidable part of life, regardless of how clean you keep your house and belongings. As well as being a general eyesore in your home, tiny dust particles can get inside your console and wreak havoc in there.
When dust finds its way inside your console, it begins to collect around the fan. Eventually, the fan becomes unable to expel the hot air from inside your console efficiently. A build-up of dust and debris in your console is essentially a recipe for your Xbox Series X|S to overheat.
Dust can also fall into the small crevices in your controller and start to cause drift. Drift is one of the most annoying problems you can experience as a gamer, and it’s also extremely difficult to treat. Prevention is definitely the best cure when it comes to drifting, which means cleaning your controller along with your console regularly.
If you are experiencing issues like graphical errors, game crashes, and other performance issues, your Xbox may already be overheating. There are several things you can try to fix your overheating Xbox Series X|S, but cleaning it is always a great first step. If that doesn’t solve your problems, clearing the cache on your Xbox Series X|S is another potential solution.
How Often Should I Clean My Xbox Series X|S and Controller?
Cleaning your console isn’t something you need to do every day. Giving it a decent clean every three to six months, depending on how must dust is usually found in your home, should be enough to keep it operating smoothly.
Your controller, on the other hand, should be cleaned more regularly. Even if you are a serial hand washer, your hands have natural oils and bacteria on them that can collect on your controller.
And although we all know it’s bad, and we shouldn’t do it, every gamer has been guilty of snacking while playing at least once in their life. That Cheeto dust isn’t doing your controller any favors. So if you do like to indulge in some snacks while gaming, cleaning your controller weekly is the best way to keep it in working order.
It isn’t just your Xbox that you have to clean either. You should also make an effort to clean your PS5 console and controller on a regular basis, as well as any other consoles you may own.
What Do I Need to Clean My Xbox Series X|S and Controller?
Cleaning your console and controller may be an easy task, but you can cause much more harm than good if you use the wrong tools or products. The only things you should use to clean your Xbox Series X|S and controller are as follows:
- A terrycloth or microfiber cloth.
- Isopropyl alcohol.
- Q-tips.
- Compressed air.
Soap and water are great for cleaning other things around your house, but you never want them around your electronics. You may also be tempted to suck the dust out of your console with a household vacuum cleaner, but they can generate a lot of static electricity that can cause some serious damage to your system.
How Do I Clean My Xbox Series X|S Console Safely?
To clean your console safely and without having to take it apart, make sure you first turn it off and unplug it from the wall. Then take your can of compressed air, and gently blow it around all the crevasses that can collect dust.
Pay particular attention to the areas around the buttons, ports, and especially the vents. When you’re blowing the dust out from around these areas, try to aim your compressed air sideways to encourage the dust to fly out of the vents rather than being forced deeper inside your console and out of reach.
If you aren’t confident with this, or you don’t have any compressed air, there is another method to get the dust out from the vents and ports. Simply dampen the end of a Q-tip with a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol and carefully collect the dust that way. This is the safest way to make sure the dust isn’t falling deeper into your console.
Now that the bulk of the dust is gone, dampen your cloth with alcohol and give the console itself a good clean to get rid of any grime and leftover dust that might be present. It is essential not to make your cloth too wet. Any liquid, even isopropyl alcohol, seeping inside your electronics can pose a risk to your system.
Once you’re done cleaning, leave your console to sit for 30 minutes to ensure all the liquid has evaporated before using it.
How Do I Clean My Xbox Wireless Controller Safely?
Cleaning your controller is just as easy as cleaning the console itself. First, slightly dampen a Q-tip with isopropyl alcohol and run it around the crevices of the buttons and under the joysticks.
Move the joysticks in a circular motion, and make sure you’re getting right underneath them. Pull your joystick up until they click out and push them back in again a couple of times to loosen up any dust that might be stuck underneath.
Once you’ve given your buttons and joysticks a thorough clean, take a cloth that is slightly damp with isopropyl alcohol and give the entire controller a good scrub to get rid of any built-up dirt and grime. Let the controller sit with your console for 30 minutes to make sure it’s completely dry before using it.
Cleaning Your Xbox Series X|S and Controller Regularly Can Increase Their Lifespan
Video game consoles are not cheap and, if cared for, can potentially last a lifetime or until you move on to the next generation of consoles at least. You don’t need any fancy products or extensive knowledge to keep your console clean and in the best condition possible.
So next time you notice some dust collecting around your Xbox, do yourself a favor by removing it before it leads to much bigger problems.
