Luminar Neo makes it easy to remove backgrounds from objects using an extension called Background Removal AI. In this tutorial, we’ll show you where you can get the extension and how to use it.
Where to Get Background Removal AI
Background Removal AI is a Luminar Neo extension that’s included in the annual $59 subscription. If you buy Luminar Neo as a one-time purchase, then Background Removal AI can be bought separately for $59.
How to Access Background Removal AI in Luminar Neo
If you’ve purchased Background Removal AI and haven’t installed it yet, you’ll find the extension by clicking on the Extras icon.
Any extensions that you own will be displayed in the pop-up menu. Each extension will either say Buy, Install, or Installed.
Once installed, some of the extensions will be accessible from the Catalog menu on the right-hand side. Extensions like HDR Merge, Focus Stacking, and Upscale each require that photos be dragged to them to use them.
But there are a few extensions, like Background Removal AI, that requires an image to be opened in the Edit menu and will be displayed in the tools. Background Removal AI is housed in the Layer Properties panel under Masking.
Background Removal AI should not be mistaken for the separate background removal tool for portraits in Luminar Neo.
How to Remove an Image Background With Background Removal AI
Once you have an image open in the Edit panel, you can choose to use Background Removal AI. As mentioned above, go to Layer Properties and then to Masking.
Then click on Background Removal AI and wait for Luminar Neo to examine the image. A series of floating dots and connected lines will fill the screen.
Luminar Neo has identified the hat and part of the skateboard as objects. For the sake of this example, let’s say that we wanted to keep both. Simply click Remove.
Allow a few moments for Luminar Neo to process the request. This time you’ll only see a text saying Removing.
The background has been removed. But you’ll notice in the below image that the selection isn’t perfect.
In cases like this, click on the Refinements Brush. Luminar Neo will then divide the selections into Transition, Object, and Background.
The three choices for refining are color-coded, with the Transition zone being white, the Object being brown, and the Background being Blue.
In the above example, parts of the skateboard are missing. We need to click on Object and paint over the skateboard to select the rest of it.
You can use the Size slider to increase or decrease the brush size. Once you’re happy with your selection, simply click on the Layer Properties toolbar.
If you want to continue to refine the selection, you can go back into the Layer Properties menu and refine each of the three choices further if needed. Or you could export the image and replace the background with another one.
If you’re not sure how to use all the features, we talk about everything you need to know about Luminar Neo to get you started.
