How to Program a Google Nest Thermostat

Making the move to a smart thermostat can be a great way to save money on your energy bills, but it can also be a difficult learning curve too.
While some of the Google Nest Thermostat models are able to learn your heating and cooling preferences, sometimes you just want to create your own schedule and keep your home comfortable on your terms.

There are currently two models of Google Nest thermostats:
The Nest Thermostat is currently the only model without the auto-schedule feature. But regardless of which model you have, both of them can be manually scheduled by you. However, the standard Nest Thermostat requires a different app from the Nest Learning Thermostat, so let’s find out how to program both models.
How the Nest Thermostat Can Save Energy
You can save energy by using a Nest Thermostat thanks to its great features. For example, you can enable Eco Temperature on your thermostat to automatically detect when you’re not at home, thus turning your heating off to save energy. Similarly, you can enable Home & Away routines or Home/Away Assist to automatically switch to Eco Temperature when it senses you’re not at home.
Auto-schedule learning is one of the stand-out features of the Google Nest Learning Thermostat. It means your thermostat can learn your routines and make automatic adjustments based on your cooling/heating history. You can ensure Auto-Schedule is on by doing the following:
- Open the Nest app for iOS or Android and select your Nest Learning Thermostat.
- Select Settings > Auto-Schedule.
By default, this option is on. If you have your thermostat set to Heat, it will learn and create heating schedules. On the other hand, if you have it set to Heat and Cool, it will create separate schedules for heating and cooling your home.
Even on the first day of using your Nest Learning Thermostat, it starts to remember your preferences. For example, if you adjust the temperature, the thermostat will remain at that temperature until it’s changed. On day two, it will continue doing the same, monitoring which temperatures you’ve set the thermostat to, and at which times. It also detects when you’re home or not, and how often you adjust the temperature.
After a few days, your Nest Learning Thermostat will fine-tune a schedule based on any adjustments you make, and from what it’s learned so far. After a week, a schedule would have been created for you, but this can be manually altered if you need to change anything.
By automatically adjusting your schedule to fit into your routine (and only heating or cooling your home when you’re there), the Nest Learning Thermostat can save you energy, and potentially money. Rather than consistently cooling or heating your home, especially if you have forgotten to adjust the temperature, this smart thermostat will work when it’s really needed.
When you start teaching your thermostat your ideal routine, you may notice other features appearing. For example, if you see a green leaf icon, known as the Nest Leaf, this means you’ve chosen a temperature that’s more energy-efficient. It can also display how long it estimates your home to warm up to the chosen temperature. So, if you schedule your home to heat up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit by 5 p.m. when you return from work, it may start earlier to reach the desired temperature for when you get home.
How to Create Schedules on Your Nest Thermostat
Only the Nest Learning Thermostat can leverage the Auto-Schedule feature. The Nest Thermostat cannot automatically adjust the temperature schedule, but the Google Savings Finder can give you suggestions on how to use the Google Home app to create schedules in order to save energy over time. Depending on your requirements, you may need to decide which Google Nest Thermostat is best.
If you’ve used your Nest Thermostat before, you may have some existing schedules set up. Here’s how to clear your existing schedules completely to start afresh:
- Press the ring on your Nest Thermostat.
- Select Settings > Reset > Schedule.
Manually creating a new schedule is easy. This allows you to change your home’s temperature at set times. This can be done in the Nest app, Google Home app, or on the Nest Thermostat.
Using the Nest app:
- Open the Nest app, then select your Nest thermostat.
- Select Schedule.
- Add or remove temperature set points to your requirements.
Using the Google Home app:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Touch and hold the Nest Thermostat tile, then select Settings.
- Select Schedules then add/remove temperature presets.
Using the Nest Thermostat:
- Using the Quick View menu, select Schedule or Settings, depending on the type of Nest Thermostat you own.
- Like the app, you can add or remove temperature times here.
Nest Temperature Sensor
Although it’s not a requirement, there is the option to invest in the Nest Temperature Sensor to further optimize your energy savings. This device works with the Nest Learning Thermostat and can be placed in any room.
Using the thermostat, you can set the temperature in different rooms to suit your liking. For example, you may want it to be cooler in the bedroom than in the lounge. You can also prioritize heating individual rooms and set schedules as normal in the Nest app. This is something that may be more useful in larger households where heat has more room to escape.
Nest Smart Thermostat Programming Made Easy
Google’s Nest Thermostat range may be an expensive investment to begin with, but it can save you energy and money in the long run. Plus, they can often be much easier to use than traditional thermostats.
Smart thermostats allow you to set schedules which means your home can be set to the ideal temperature whether you’re at home, or away from home. The Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat use different features to ensure your home is only heated, or cooled, when you’re there, ensuring your energy doesn’t go to waste.
But, like traditional thermostats, you can also manually set or schedule temperatures without automatic intervention, giving you the best of both worlds.
