How to Limit Unwanted Interactions on Twitter: 8 Tips

Here are some precautions you can take to prevent strangers and trolls from interacting with you on Twitter.

While it’s common for tweets to go viral on Twitter, many users prefer to stay away from the limelight and don’t necessarily want to interact with strangers on the app.

Fortunately, you can limit the interactions on Twitter. Here are some tips to limit unwanted Twitter interactions.

1. Enable Protected Tweets

The protected Tweets feature increases your privacy and ensures the content is shared with only your followers. It marks your Twitter account as private and doesn’t allow non-followers to view your posts and replies.

However, it’s important to note that your followers can still take screenshots of your tweet and save media. To enable protected tweets on your Twitter:

1. Open Twitter and tap your profile picture.
2. Go to Settings and Support to open a drop-down menu.
3. Press Settings and privacy.
4. In the Settings menu, open Privacy and safety.
5. Select Audience and tagging.
6. Toggle the Protect your Tweets button.

After enabling the protected tweets feature, users need to approve follow requests. You can do so by following these steps:

1. Tap your profile picture on the home page.
2. From the menu, choose Follower requests.
3. Approve the followers you wish to add to your profile.

2. Mute or Block Users

Twitter also allows you to mute or block other users. If someone is trying to create an uncomfortable environment for you online, just tap the Mute or Block button.

Muting someone on Twitter means you can still interact with them; it just mutes their profile, content, and DMs.

To mute a user on Twitter:

1. Open the Twitter profile of the user you wish to mute.
2. Tap the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner of your screen.
3. Select Mute.

The user won’t know you have muted them. If you wish to revoke a user’s access from your Twitter profile, the best practice is to block them.

A blocked user cannot message you or follow your profile, and your tweets are fully restricted from them. Depending on your preference, you can opt for a hard or soft block on Twitter.

3. Disable Your Spaces Activity

Twitter Spaces allow you to create audio rooms on Twitter, which people can join and listen in on. The host controls the session and has authority over who can contribute to the Spaces.

By turning off your visibility, your followers cannot see which Twitter Spaces you are a part of. However, if you and another user are a part of the same Twitter Space, they will know your role.

To hide your Twitter Spaces activities from followers:

1. Tap Settings and Support and open Settings and privacy from the drop-down menu.
2. Select Privacy and safety.
3. Scroll down and tap Spaces.
4. Toggle the Allow followers to see which Spaces you’re listening to button and turn it off.

4. Choose Who Can Reply To You

Sometimes, getting many replies under your tweet can be frustrating. You might want the tweet to be private or dedicated solely to relevant users. You can choose who can reply to your tweet by changing these settings.

1. Tap the + icon to start a new tweet.
2. Tap the Everyone can reply button in the lower left corner to change the reply privacy.
3. You can change it to People you follow and Only people you mention.

The settings are saved by default until you decide to change them.

5. Close Your DMs

When someone DMs you on Twitter, it goes to the Message Request folder until accepted. You can receive DMs from anyone on Twitter.

This feature increases the risk of receiving spam or getting approached by random people. If you wish to remain in touch with only your current circle, we recommend closing your DMs. To do that:

1. Tap your profile picture located on your home page.
2. Go to Settings and Support and tap Settings and privacy.
3. Open Privacy and safety and select Direct messages.
4. Toggle the Allow message requests from everyone tab to turn it off.

6. Share Your Tweets With a Specific Twitter Circle

A Twitter Circle allows you to share tweets with a specific group of people, regardless of whether they are a part of your follower list or not. It increases your privacy by restricting the audience and removing the retweet option.

It maintains the privacy of other users as members are unaware of who else is a part of your Twitter Circle; unless they see a non-protected reply from someone in your Circle. This feature allows users to share content and engage with people relevant to the tweet.

To use the Twitter Circle feature:

1. Tap the + icon on the home page.
2. Press the All Followers button to choose your audience.
3. Select Twitter Circle and add relevant people.

7. Change Discovery Settings for Your Twitter Account

People with access to your personal details, such as email address or phone number, can find you on Twitter. Follow these steps to stop people from finding you on Twitter via your mobile number or email.

1. Tap your profile picture and go to Settings and Support.
2. From the drop-down menu, open Settings and privacy and select Privacy and safety.
3. Scroll down and tap Discoverability and contacts.
4. Toggle the tabs under the Discoverability menu to turn them off.
5. You can also disable the Sync address book contacts tab, so people in your contact list cannot find you.

8. Set Content Preferences

Sometimes, the type of content popping up on your Twitter feed may also become annoying. Setting or changing your content preferences is a great way to avoid this inconvenience.

To do so:

1. Open the Settings and Privacy section and select Privacy and safety.
2. Next, open the Content you see section.
3. Tap Topics and Interests and select content relevant to your liking.

Keep Your Twitter Relevant and Restricted

Twitter is a public app where people tweet and share all types of content. Sometimes receiving unwanted interactions from other users on the app can be annoying.
