On February 17, 2023, Inkscape announced that it would be running its About Screen art contest for version 1.3 a little bit differently. With this year marking 20 years for the popular open-source vector editor, developers have added a theme to this year’s contest.
What Is the Inkscape About Screen Contest?
Inkscape, one of the best free graphic design apps, does something special with each new release. Its developers typically reach out to users who are interested in showcasing artwork that they have created using it.
One of the ways in which they typically do this is in the form of an About Screen contest where users can submit their artistic creations in the hopes of seeing them on Inkscape’s About screen, as well as various other areas such as merchandise, banners, and other pages on Inkscape.
What Makes 2023’s Inkscape About Screen Contest Different?
Simply put, Inkscape is turning 20. It was initially formed in 2003 when developers opted to separate their work from a previous vector editor called Sodipodi, which ceased its own development the following year. That process, called forking, is fairly common in the FOSS landscape.
In the two decades since, Inkscape has continually grown and evolved thanks to the contributions of many, and has steadily become one of the most recognizable pillars of the FOSS ecosystem. Its cross-platform nature (Inkscape is also one of the best vector editors for Mac), has given it a wide reach in the design world with both professionals and hobbyists alike.
To celebrate that milestone, the developers have decided that the 2023 contest would do something that they haven’t tried before. They decided that this year’s contest would have a theme.

How to Submit Your Art for Inkscape 1.3
The Inkscape 1.3 About Screen Contest is open to submissions until March 19, 2023. After which a round of community and contributor voting will occur, with the ultimate winner announced on April 4, 2023.
