Reading Time: 4 minutesMake your portraits look natural.
There are still many limitations when it comes to creating AI portraits. That’s where creative photo editors like Luminar Neo can help. Luminar Neo is packed with creative tools that can dramatically improve your AI portraits and set them apart from other creators who use the same program as you.
In this tutorial, we’ll share with you how to use Luminar Neo as part of your editing workflow to finish off your AI portraits.
There’s Room for Enhancements for Your AI Portraits
The rise of AI art and portraits in particular is nothing short of amazing. What can be achieved in moments based on text prompts would have seemed miraculous even a few years ago, and it still does for many of us. But there’s room for enhancements for your AI portraits, especially when you have creative photo editors like Luminar Neo, which runs 100 percent on artificial intelligence.
Luminar Neo offers a suite of tools that are tailor-made for photos and AI portraits alike. We propose a workflow that will dramatically improve your AI portraits while helping you differentiate your AI portraits from other creators. What follows is a workflow that can be used with every AI portrait you create.
If you haven’t used any of the AI programs out there to create AI portraits, we show you how to use Midjourney to create AI art.
Step 1: Use Upscale AI to Make Your Images Larger
One of the first steps that you may want to consider is to enlarge your images since many AI programs out there don’t offer large-resolution upscale options. Once you have your image imported into Luminar Neo, simply drag and drop it into Upscale AI.
We show you everything you need to know about Upscale AI.
Step 2 (Optional): HDR Merge to Brighten Images
Once you have a larger version of your image to work on, you may want to try HDR Merge, especially if the AI portrait is darker. Like Upscale AI, you simply drag the image into HDR Merge. Then click Merge.
After a few moments, the HDR Merge version of the image will appear in the HDR Merge folder in the Luminar Neo Catalog.
Step 3: Enhance AI
After the first two steps, it’s time to start editing the AI portrait using Luminar Neo’s suite of creative editing tools. Simply click on Edit at the top of the screen and a toolbar will appear on the right. Find Enhance AI and find a slider value that works best.
Enhance AI tends to brighten AI portraits and adds contrast intelligently.
Step 4: The Develop Module
Under Essentials, find Develop and make use of some of the basic but effective sliders that you’ll find in all professional photo editors. You may not need to use all the sliders but definitely check out the Light and Black and Whites sliders to make exposure and contrast adjustments.
We show you everything you need to know about Luminar Neo if you need help navigating the program.
Step 5: Portrait Bokeh
Portrait Bokeh serves two useful functions. First, it can be used to blur the background using the Amount slider. Secondly, you can brighten or darken the background and change the Warmth values.
For this image, we darkened the background and changed the Warmth to -100. This helps the subject stand out from the background a bit better. You can also use the Brush Control panel to add or subtract focus.
We also cover how to use Luminar’s Portrait Bokeh to create a fantastic background blur.
Step 6: Face AI
Face AI offers some powerful enhancements for your AI portraits. You can add light to the face and edit many features of the eyes and mouth using multiple sliders.
Two very useful sliders are Face Light and Eye Enhancer. Almost every AI portrait could use a boost from these sliders. We also show you how to use Photoshop to enhance the eyes if you need an extra boost.
Step 7: Skin AI
Another great AI portrait tool is Skin AI. You may not need this tool in large amounts, but the Shine Removal feature may prove handy if there are any bright spots.
We also show you how to use Luminar AI for better portraits. All of these tips can be applied to Luminar Neo users since Neo is an updated version of Luminar AI.
Step 8 (Optional): The Clone Stamp Tool
We don’t need the Clone Stamp Tool for this image, but you certainly may need it for many of your AI portraits. Just for a demonstration, we’ll use the Clone Stamp Tool to remove the doorknobs and locks in this image.
You’ll find that this tool comes in very useful for AI portraits that have AI-generated distortions and flaws.
Step 9: Vignette
In most cases, your AI portraits will benefit from adding a vignette even if it’s a subtle one. They greatly enhance your subject by drawing the viewer’s eyes to it.
Use Feather and Inner Light to put the spotlight on the subject’s face.
Step 10: Mood
The Mood tool is great for dramatically changing the look of your AI portrait. It’s the one creative tool that can instantly set your AI portraits apart from users who use the same AI program as you.
For this image, we used Seattle as the LUT.
Step 11: Layers
Layers is arguably the most powerful tool for creatively enhancing your AI portraits. You can use the host of lighting effects that come free with Luminar Neo or you can upload your own textures, effects, and images to set your AI portraits apart from the rest.
For this image, we used multiple layers to set this AI portrait apart, including a new background, a texture, and two lighting effects.
