How to Create a Non-Explicit Version of Any Apple Music Playlist
Apple Music has no built-in feature for creating a clean version of your playlists. Instead, we’ll need to run a Shortcut on your iPhone. The Make Clean Playlist shortcut, which Reddit user AdTrue6877 shared on the Shortcuts subreddit, checks all songs in an existing Apple Music playlist and finds their clean versions, which are then added to a new playlist.
Follow these steps to get started:
- Using your iPhone or iPad, open your browser and go to the Make Clean Playlist Shortcut page on iCloud. This link will open in the Shortcuts app.
- Tap Add Shortcut to add Make Clean Playlist to your shortcuts. This will now be accessible on your Shortcuts homepage.
- Next, tap the shortcut to open. A new pop-up will open with all Apple Music playlists in your library (even those you didn’t create).
- Select a playlist that you wish to create a clean version of from the list.
- Enter your preferred name for your new playlist and tap Done.
The shortcut may take a while to run, depending on the number of songs in your playlist. For an easier experience in the future, you can utilize different ways to run any shortcut quicker.
Once done, you’ll find the new playlist on the Apple Music app. If the shortcut can’t find any clean versions of certain songs, it will display them in a pop-up, and these songs will not be added to the new playlist. If you see the pop-up, tap Done or Cancel to dismiss.
And since we’re utilizing a shortcut, you can’t get this functionality to work on Android. Luckily, unlike Apple Music, you can filter explicit content on Spotify via a built-in feature and across platforms.
How to Filter Curse Words Across Apple Music
An alternative to using the Make Clean Playlist shortcut is to enable content restriction on your device. If you do so, Apple Music will remove swear words from all songs you play by cutting them out or adding a bleep. Apple Music will also censor lyrics, so you won’t tell what was there.
The process is very similar to how you can put parental controls on an iPhone or iPad. If you want to start filtering out curse words, all you need to do is follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Screen Time.
- Select Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Toggle on Content & Privacy Restrictions if disabled.
- Next, tap Content Restrictions.
- Select Music, Podcasts, News, Fitness.
- Finally, select Clean.
And that’s it. As you can see, other apps and content like podcasts will also be affected when you use this feature. If that’s not exactly what you’re looking for, you can remove the restriction anytime by following the same steps and selecting Explicit in the final step.
