Here’s an Easy Way to Quickly Take a Note on Your Pixel Phone

Reading Time: 3 minutes

It’s as easy as double-tapping the back of your phone.

If you’re a Google Pixel user—and take a lot of notes on your phone—there’s a quick hack you can use to jot down notes on it quickly. It involves using the Quick Tap gesture, available on Pixel 4a (5G) and above models, and assigning it the action to create a new note on a note-taking app.

We’ll show you how to set up Quick Tap with Simplenote. Simplenote is free, sleek, and ideal for basic note-taking needs. Plus, it offers a new note action for the Quick Tap gesture, which lets you start a new note straightaway.

Set Up Quick Tap to Launch Simplenote

Quick Tap is a Pixel-specific feature that allows you to perform tasks by double-tapping the back of your phone.

It supports a number of device operations. However, the one we need for our use case is the Open app action. Open app lets you launch an app by double-tapping your phone’s back. Additionally, with some apps, you can even use this action to access specific menus within the app, which can be quite useful too.

For instance, with Simplenote, you get the option to do both: launch the app and create a new note inside it. The latter saves you the step of having to create a new note manually upon launching the app.

Enable Quick Tap on a Pixel Phone

Before you can use Quick Tap, you need to enable it first. Here’s how you to do this:

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Go to System > Gestures > Quick Tap to start actions.
  3. Toggle the button next to Use Quick Tap.

Assign the New Note Action to Quick Tap

Once Quick Tap is enabled, follow these steps to assign it the Open app action to create a new note in Simplenote:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Head over to System > Gestures > Quick Tap to start actions.
  3. Tap the Open app radio button to select it.
  4. Hit the gear icon next to Open app.
  5. Scroll down to find Simplenote on the following screen, tap the gear icon beside it, and select New Note.

If you use some other note-taking app on your Android device, you can select it under the Open app action and tap the gear icon beside it to find out all the actions it supports. After which, you can simply select the action that suits your requirements, and you’re all set.

Create a New Note on Your Pixel Using Quick Tap

With the Quick Tap gesture set to create a new note in Simplenote, whenever you want to take a quick note now, simply perform the double-gesture on the back of your phone.

If you’ve enabled PIN or fingerprint authentication in Simplenote, enter it to authenticate yourself. Simplenote will then create a new note for you.

Here, you can add text, edit it, and add tags, among other things. Once you’ve finished writing, hit the back arrow key, and Simplenote will save the note and take you back to its home screen.

Streamline Note-Taking On Your Pixel Phone

As you just saw, the Quick Tap gesture can essentially transform the back of your Pixel phone into a functional button and make launching Simplenote (or any other note-taking app) or starting a new note on it extremely easy.

In fact, not just that, but it also gives you the ability to start a quick note from anywhere on the device—be it the home screen, lock screen, or any other app.

If you’re new to Pixel, Quick Tap can help you with several other functions on the device. Taking scrolling screenshots, for instance, is an interesting application you can simplify using Quick Tap if you need to take a lot of them.
