Elon Musk Confirms More Cybertruck Delays for 2023
Reading Time: 2 minutesEveryone wants a Cybertruck, but when will we see them on the road?
Elon Musk has effectively confirmed that anyone expecting a Cybertruck delivery in 2023 will have to wait a little longer.
While many excited early adopters on the Cybertruck waiting list had thought that Tesla’s ultra-futuristic truck would arrive in 2023, comments made by Musk at Tesla’s Q4 2022 financial results call suggest a different timeline.
So, when will we see the Cybertruck on the road?
Elon Musk Downplays the Start of Cybertruck Production
Speaking at Tesla’s Q4 2022 and full-year financial results call (full video below), held on January 25, 2023, Elon Musk urged excited Tesla fans and would-be Cybertruck owners to temper expectations.
The hype surrounding the Cybertruck is palpable, especially as during a 2022 speech at Tesla’s new Gigafactory in Austin, TX, Musk effectively confirmed that the Cybertruck would begin production ‘in the middle of next year,’ referring to 2023.
The Cybertruck release date has always been a bone of contention for those on the waiting list, as it has frequently shifted further down the road.
But now, at the Q4 2022 financial results call, Elon Musk elaborated on the Cybertruck situation further—and it won’t be music to the ears of buyers or investors:
We do expect production to start, I don’t know, maybe sometime this summer. But I always like try to downplay the start of production because the start of production is always very slow. It increases exponentially, but it’s always very slow at first. So I wouldn’t put too much thought in start of production. It’s kind of when does volume production actually happen, and that’s next year.
Now, that Musk is attempting to downplay when the Cybertruck might enter production early in 2023 isn’t a bad thing overall. It’s better to get the disappointment out of the way early.
When Will the Tesla Cybertruck Launch?
Musk hasn’t outright said that Cybertruck production won’t begin in 2023, which means that at least some production is likely to take place. We’d still expect to see some Cybertruck orders fulfilled towards the end of 2023, though how many is anyone’s guess.
Tesla Posts Healthy Year-on-Year Profits
Despite the disappointing Cybertruck news, Tesla’s earning call was a success, with the company posting $24.3 billion in total revenue (an increase of 37% from $17.7bn), with profit rising 19% from $4.8bn to $5.7bn.
Those figures don’t include Tesla’s recent price cuts to several of its premium model EVs but illustrate the demand for Tesla worldwide.
