7 Exciting Smartphones Unveiled at MWC 2023

Reading Time: 5 minutes

MWC 2023 saw the launch of many new Android phones. Here are the ones that got us most excited.

Mobile World Congress, one of the largest exhibitions of mobile communications technology, is over for another year. And although many new devices launched during the 2023 event, smartphones generally had center stage.

So, what are the most exciting new smartphone models we found at MWC 2023? Let’s find out.

1. Xiaomi 13 Pro

No international tech show is complete without a flagship phone launch, and at MWC 2023, Xiaomi revealed its next top-of-the-line offering—the Xiaomi 13 Pro. Aside from the usual flagship goodies, including a 120Hz display, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, and ultra-fast charging, we’re getting a large 1-inch camera sensor, too.

While many smartphone makers try to wow consumers with large megapixel numbers, there comes the point where sensor size is more important than megapixel count. And if you pair that with Xiaomi’s partnership with Leica, you get a camera system that delivers excellent imaging.

Beyond the Xiaomi 13 Pro, we also get the vanilla Xiaomi 13 and, for the first time across the globe, the Xiaomi 13 Lite. These models, all equipped with Leica cameras, complete the Xiaomi 13 line-up launched at MWC 2023, giving Xiaomi fans a wide range of flagship phones to choose from.

2. Honor Magic5 Pro

Huawei, and its mid-range sub-brand, Honor, used to offer some groundbreaking smartphones in its line-up. However, it has since left the limelight when many western governments, including the US and Canada, banned Huawei.

But now that Huawei sold Honor to another group of companies, the latter is looking to make a comeback. It’s offering groundbreaking products like the Honor Magic Vs while ensuring that its upcoming phones will have Google apps and services, unlike Huawei’s devices.

And, in line with its efforts to reclaim its position in the market, the company is releasing the Honor Magic5 Pro.

Like other flagship devices, it’s powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, with a 120Hz display, IP68 environmental protection, and fast charging. It’s also making waves in the camera department but taking it differently.

Instead of going for a camera brand partnership, offering 200x zoom, or placing a single large sensor at the back, the Honor Magic5 Pro has three 50MP cameras. So, whether you’re shooting an ultrawide photo, a standard wide image, or zooming in with its periscope telephoto camera, you’re guaranteed excellent image quality throughout its zoom spectrum.

3. Oppo Find N2 Flip

Although it launched a few days before MWC began, the Find N2 Flip still featured heavily in Oppo’s booth in Barcelona, offering an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Motorola Razr. This clamshell phone has a relatively large 3.26-inch cover screen, allowing you to interact comfortably with your phone even when it’s closed.

Another advantage of the N2 Flip over the Z Flip4 is that it folds flat when closed, ensuring you don’t get anything between the screen when it’s in your pocket. It also has a wider and taller display when opened, giving you more screen real estate to play with.

The phone has a larger battery capacity and charges faster at 44W, allowing you to fill it up in less than an hour while having power for the entire day. With the Oppo Find N2 Flip, we’re getting another option in the stylish foldable phone, driving competition and innovation in the smartphone industry.

4. Tecno Phantom V Fold

Although Tecno is not as popular as Samsung and Xiaomi, it has long been in the smartphone space, offering affordable yet groundbreaking devices in underserved markets. But recently, Tecno has been making a push in the global smartphone scene—and it’s using the Tecno Phantom V Fold to spearhead this advance.

The Phantom V Fold competes against other foldables, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Oppo Find N2. It also features two 50MP and one 13MP primary camera, plus two selfie cameras.

With the launch of this smartphone, we’re now seeing more options in the vertical folding phone space. This could give Samsung serious competition, especially as the device is expected to retail at a lower price than the Z Fold4.

5. Realme GT3

Realme is best known for offering mid-range devices, but it still releases groundbreaking features from time to time. At MWC, the company released the Realme GT3. Although it only features the last-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and the usual triple camera setup, it has something up its sleeve that no other manufacturer has so far—240W super-fast charging.

This fast-charging capability can give the phone 20% battery in as little as 80 seconds (it was even able to manage 23% during the live demo). It also claims 50% capacity in four minutes and a full charge at nine minutes and 30 seconds.

So, if you don’t need the most powerful specifications, want a phone that’ll last you all day, and be able to recharge it from empty to full while you’re in the shower, the Realme GT3 should deliver everything you need.

6. OnePlus 11 Concept

As smartphone chips become more powerful, we’re also starting to see them run hotter. That’s why many gaming phones, like the Asus ROG Phone 6 and the RedMagic 8, feature built-in active cooling.

However, even this may not be enough as we see faster smartphone chips—this is where the OnePlus 11 Concept comes in. By adding piezoelectric micro-pumps and liquid cooling, OnePlus hopes to improve the performance of its phones and increase the time it takes before its chip begins to throttle.

Although the OnePlus 11 Concept is just a concept phone, it’s showing consumers the possibilities of the future. As smartphones become more powerful, liquid and active cooling could allow us to use them for an ever wider range of tasks.

7. Motorola Rizr

We also have another concept phone on the MWC floor, this time from the creator of the iconic Razr flip phone. The Motorola Rizr is based on the sliding-phone counterpart of the old Razr phone, but this time, instead of a complete screen sliding up to reveal the keypad, we’re getting a rollable display.

The phone starts as a 5-inch smartphone, relatively close to the iPhone 13 Mini in size. But when you double-press the power button, the screen rolls up to its full-screen size of 6.5 inches. This gives you a large display with a smaller pocket footprint.

Again, this is just a concept, so we don’t know when this will hit the market (if ever). Furthermore, after the novelty of the rolling screen wore off, many things bugged our editors when they took a hands-on look at the Motorola Rizr on the showroom floor. So, if Motorola ever gets this device into production, we’re hoping they iron out all the kinks first.

Exciting Innovations, New Competition in the Smartphone Space

Many new smartphones launched at MWC 2023—from models with a sizable one-inch camera sensor and three 50MP cameras to ultra-fast-charging devices. We’re also seeing new foldables that will compete against established names like Samsung and some interesting concept phones that might (or might not) make it into production.

These devices will continue to push the boundaries of smartphone technology, and we’re hoping to get these in our pockets in 2023.
