5 International EVs You Can’t Buy in the US
Reading Time: 4 minutesMost EVs are available in the US, but not all. Here are some of the best EVs yet to hit US EV owners.
Electric vehicles used to be oddities that you rarely spotted on public roads, but now they’re seemingly everywhere. Tesla is no longer considered a rare car brand, and most major automakers have released an EV or have one in development.
Yet, there are still some EVs that are considered forbidden fruit in the US market. Most notably, NIO is an automaker that has yet to bring any of its models to the US. NIO isn’t alone, though, as quite a few automakers have EVs that only cater to international markets.
1. NIO ET7
The NIO ET7 is an attractive luxury sedan that resembles a Tesla Model S quite a bit. The front end that’s completely devoid of a traditional grille is especially reminiscent of a Tesla sedan, but overall the NIO is actually better looking than the Model S.
The Tesla is already starting to look long in the tooth, but the NIO looks high-tech and fresh. The only strange thing about the NIO’s styling is the integration of what NIO calls ‘autonomous driving sensing units,’ which are located on the roof of the car, just above the front windshield.
Some people might like the futuristic protrusions, but it looks unfinished and makes the car look like an autonomous taxi. The rest of the car is beautiful, with smooth-flowing lines that put a Tesla to shame.
Nio also designed a great interior that includes a funky personal assistant that talks to the driver. Its infotainment system is a pure Tesla copy though, especially the climate controls. The only downside to this great EV is that it’s not for sale in the US.
2. Honda e
The Honda e looks like a tiny Rivian Amazon Delivery van, which means it’s got a very likable front end. In fact, the entire car’s design is extremely attractive and well-thought-out. It’s a city car, which means the 137-mile range is not anything to brag about, but for small distances, it’s perfect.
The interior is also tasteful and futuristic, especially the dedicated screens for each rearview camera. One of the coolest Honda e touches is the implementation of cameras that replace each rearview mirror. This makes the exterior appear ultra-slick and modern.
The Honda e isn’t sold in the US, and with its limited range, it probably won’t ever be offered. But, for the markets which value city cars, this vehicle holds a lot of appeal.
3. Mercedes-Benz EQA
Mercedes builds some of the best electric SUVs on the market, and the EQA is no exception. This is the entry-level offering from the Mercedes EQ line of electric vehicles, and it’s a stunner. The look is arguably more handsome than the boring EQS sedan, as well as its EQS SUV counterpart. The EQA is much smaller, so it appears sportier by default.
The interior of the EQA is absolutely gorgeous, and there are blue accents all around the cabin that shout to the world that you’ve bought an electric Mercedes-Benz. The interior of this particular EQ-line vehicle is much more restrained than in the EQS flagships, which is a good thing for people that don’t necessarily want the enormous Hyperscreen.
The EQA is a great candidate to bring over to the US market, especially because the gas-powered GLA is already for sale in the US, and it sells amazingly. Basically, anything with an SUV form factor and a premium badge will sell well in the US market. It will be interesting to see if SUVs continue to dominate the electric vehicle sector as more EVs continue to roll out from different manufacturers.
4. NIO ES8
The ES8 is another excellent NIO product that isn’t available in the US. This specific NIO is an SUV and a very handsome one at that. The interior is typical NIO, which means it’s great, and the smart (but slightly strange) NOMI personal assistant is also present.
NOMI performs a handful of tasks if you ask it to, but the biggest draw is the anime-like appearance of the personal assistant, especially the way it playfully interacts with the driver. Perhaps NOMI is a gimmick at the present moment. However, it does seem to have a lot of functionality, and it definitely appears to be the future of automotive personal assistants.
It’s definitely head and shoulders over traditional voice activated personal assistants that seem boring and robotic. The ES8 also features seating for six people in comfort, along with NIO’s greatest innovation, battery swapping. Whether this system will ever replace fast chargers is up for debate, but there’s definitely a space for battery swapping, especially if you need to charge up immediately.
NIO has engineered the entire experience to be seamless, although the range is excellent at 360 an estimated 360 miles, so range anxiety shouldn’t worry you. NIO has excellent vehicles that definitely seem ready to be sold in the US market, and whenever it decides to bring over its excellent EVs, the competition will definitely be put on notice.
5. VW ID.3
Volkswagen is on an absolute tear with its electric vehicle lineup. VW’s EV lineup in the US includes the great ID.4, but it doesn’t offer the gorgeous ID.3 stateside.
The ID.3 is one of the best-looking EVs ever, and it’s not a surprise because the styling is very Golf-esque. If you want a car design that will stand the test of time and continue looking fresh, the VW Golf is a great design to mimic.
The ID.3 might look like a Golf, but it’s unmistakably an electric car. The exterior has the typical EV smoothness, and the rear end looks menacing with the blacked-out trim. Inside the ID.3 looks very much like an EV, especially with the prerequisite white trim surfaces inside.
Tesla also does beautiful white interiors, but it’s worth thinking about how difficult it might be to keep clean before taking the plunge. The range is also pretty good from the 58kWh battery, which delivers approximately 265 miles on a single charge.
The ID.3 isn’t necessarily the type of car that would be ultra-popular in the United States, but VW should still consider bringing it over as an electric alternative for Golf enthusiasts.
The US EV Market Has Room for More Models
Electric vehicles are the biggest craze in the automotive segment, and a more diverse offering of cars in the US can only benefit the consumer. At the moment, there are excellent electric vehicles for sale in the US, but some of the best EVs worldwide currently aren’t offered in the United States.
